ARTIST
STATEMENT
I
tell ghost stories in acrylic, oil and mixed media. My approach blends figurative and
abstract elements to create an ongoing internal narrative. The faint images I see emerging
from an abstract background often determine the story of the completed painting. If
I have to provide a label for my work, Ill call it figurative
expressionism.
I see the world as a living internal landscape. When I look closely across
my landscape, I see the images of mask wearers and ghosts and lost children trying to find
their way home. On the roads of my interior landscape, we are all partial, we are
all broken, we are all seeking our place in a puzzle we dont quite understand.
I work intuitively and spontaneously, embracing the "art of fouls" to
bring the contradictions of anger, sadness and a fiercely protected shred of hope to my
work. I rarely know where a piece is going, but I know when we get there.
The primitive figures that inhabit my painted work symbolize my fundamental belief in the
inherent fragility and loneliness of the human spirit. The past, in all its shadow and
specter, looms large in my work.
Much of my mixed media work uses images of my childhood family as a means of creating an
ongoing visual fictionalized biography. As with all biography, my life is equal parts
truth and fiction.
I first began to paint in November 2000, intending to be a full time writer. Then, the
stories in my head became pictures.
To date, I have completed over 600 acrylic, oil, and mixed media pieces.
I
have my doubts about heaven, but I still believe in ghosts.
